Amazon Ships in Product Packaging (SIPP)

Amazon Ships in Product Packaging (SIPP) at Klingele

As a leading e-commerce retailer, Amazon knows that packaging is an important factor in customer satisfaction. The “Amazon Ships in Product Packaging (SIPP) ” programme is based on customer feedback on shipping packaging and was the result of extensive data analysis. The following four key issues were identified by Amazon for packaging optimisation:

  • Damaged products
  • Oversized shipping packaging
  • Difficult-to-open shipping packaging
  • Packaging waste disposal

Together with leading brand companies and manufacturers, Amazon developed a programme to clearly define the requirements for frustration-free packaging whilst simultaneously optimising sustainability and supply chain costs. It stipulates that frustration-free packaging should always be designed to ensure easy opening, reduce the use of packaging materials and provide a positive unboxing experience for the customer.

Certified Frustration Free Packaging von Amazon

The APASS network

With the Amazon Packaging Supplier Network (APASS), Amazon provides suppliers, manufacturers and vendors with a network to help them to certify their products as Prep-Free Packaging (PFP), Ships in Own Container (SIOC) and Frustration-Free Packaging (FFP). Through this network, a list of companies and laboratories is available to assist with the inspection, design and delivery of packaging in accordance with Amazon’s APASS regulations.

Three levels of packaging certification

Every vendor who uses packaging affected by the APASS regulations must comply with the requirements, testing methods and certification procedures specified therein. Packaging used via Amazon must be certified by Amazon and tested by ISTA-approved testing laboratories. Amazon Marketplace packaging is not yet affected by the APASS programme and is also not required to pay compensation.

The Amazon Ships in Product Packaging (SIPP) programme divides all packaging into three groups:

Group 1

FFP

Frustration-Free Packaging

Frustration-Free Packaging (FFP) for Amazon FFP

Amazon FFP does not require any additional outer packaging by Amazon. Packaging is easy to open and recyclable, and packaging material is reduced to a minimum.

Group 2

SIOC

Ships In Own Container

Ships In Own Container (SIOC) packaging for Amazon FFP

Amazon SIOC is used for products that are shipped in their original packaging from manufacturers. The “Ships in Own Container (SIOC)” packaging is shipped to end customers via the Amazon distribution network without additional Amazon outer packaging. The requirements are otherwise largely the same as those for FFP.

Group 3

PFP

Preparation-Free Packaging

Preparation-Free Packaging (PFP) for Amazon FFP

Amazon PFP tests original product packaging that cannot be sent to end customers due to its small size and requires an additional Amazon outer packaging. The original packaging must remain undamaged during transport and does not require any further preparation by Amazon (Prep-Free).

Amazon packaging test in accordance with ISTA 6.

Amazon tests all Frustration-Free Packaging in accordance with the ISTA 6 test standard (International Safe Transit Association). The aim is to provide sufficient protection against shipping damage whilst preventing the use of additional outer packaging by Amazon. The required packaging tests for Amazing ISTA 6 are carried out by ISTA-certified test laboratories.
