Every year, almost seven million tonnes of plastic and synthetic waste land in our oceans, where they form vast garbage patches in the water. The largest of these is in the North Pacific and spans an area as big as Central Europe. It is time to act. With the WellBag, we have accepted this challenge by developing a versatile alternative to the plastic bag.
Nevertheless, in order to enable more than just environmentally friendly consumers to avoid plastic and synthetic materials, political intervention is required. The EU has also recognised and responded to the problem with plastic bags.

The Directorate-General for Environment and retailers have agreed to charge customers for plastic bags in the future.  Companies will decide for themselves how much the plastic bags will cost.

The EU Directive adopted on 01.10.2015 stipulates:

• a per capita reduction from the current 198 plastic bags to 90 (2019) and 40 (2025)
• A per capita consumption of 71 plastic bags per year in Germany
  
  

Regulations in other European countries

Italy: Pure plastic bags have been prohibited since 2011
France: Plastic bags are prohibited since July 2016. Also for fruit and vegetables since 2017
Great Britain: A charge for plastic bags was introduced since October 2015
Norway: Plastic bags are still used with every purchase. No plans to introduce a charge or ban are scheduled.

Current regulations in Germany

The Federal Ministry of the Environment and retailers have agreed to charge customers for plastic bags in the future. Companies will decide for themselves how much the plastic bags shall cost.
